Erica Wanless

University of Newcastle, Australia

Erica Wanless completed her PhD at the Australian National University in 1995. Then followed a successful postdoc with William Ducker at the University of Otago, where she advanced the field of AFM soft contact imaging of adsorbed surfactant. Since then she has been employed at the University of Newcastle (Australia).

Erica has performed extensive fundamental research on the behaviour of stimulus responsive polymer molecules adsorbed to, or grafted from solid interfaces, and reported how these smart coatings behave in a variety of aqueous environments. Current research concerns the behaviour of polymer brushes at solid-aqueous solution interfaces in response to the presence of specific ions. In a second major theme Erica has conducted investigations into how polymeric colloids and mineral particles can stabilise fluid interfaces as underpin particle-stabilised foams or Pickering emulsions. This has recently evolved into an investigation of a novel electrostatic route to liquid marble formation.

Erica is an Advisory Board Member for the Journal of Colloid and Interface Science (Elsevier) and serves on the Editorial Board of Advances in Colloid & Interface Science (Elsevier).
