Prof Ben Hankamer completed his PhD, Post-Doctoral Researcher and Research Lectureship positions at Imperial College London in the areas of photosynthesis and structural biology before taking up a group leader position at the University of Queensland in (2002).

He was awarded an Eisenhower Fellowship for his work in renewable fuels in 2009, and in 2011 acted as the Australian representative of the International Energy Agency (Task 21 Bio-H2). He launched the Centre for Solar Biotechnology in 2017 to facilitate advanced microalgae systems development, worked extensively with industry, served on government advisory panels, and participated in international trade delegations.
