Jaythoon is a Senior Clinical Scientist and Adjunct Professor at the National Virus Reference Laboratory based on the campus of University College Dublin in Ireland (https://ucd.nvrl.ie(opens in new tab/window)) where she provides clinical and scientific leadership to support the development of a patient focussed diagnostic service. She was awarded a degree in Biochemistry and subsequently a PhD in Immunology from Trinity College Dublin.
She is also a Fellow of the Academy of Clinical Science and Laboratory Medicine in Ireland and the Royal College of Pathologists in the United Kingdom. The focus of her research specialities involves a greater understanding of the factors affecting the development of immunity due to vaccination or natural viral exposure with a particular reference to mumps and mumps outbreaks in highly vaccinated populations. A secondary stream of research investigation focuses on the discovery of biomarkers in the field of transplantation with particular emphasis on the infection by Epstein Barr Virus and Cytomegalovirus in paediatric renal transplant recipients. The findings from these studies aim to facilitate the development of innovative diagnostic assays to help improve laboratory based diagnostic algorithms. Jaythoon has published widely in the field of infection and immunity and is a recent recipient of the ‘Irish Laboratory Scientist of the Year Award.
